**lab grades- your points out of 250 that are from lab are posted on Canvas!! This is (your lab percent/100) x 250. Please contact your TA or Dr. Lee if you have any questions.
**Final over chapters 10, 20, 14-19, 21, and 25. Expect 28 questions + the 0.5 pt honor code, but 2 of the questions count as 2, so 30.5 will be possible; however, I am planning to count your best 27.5.
** We are working first on Final Exam grades, then on Course Letter Grades. I am hoping for these to be done by Thursday pm.
I wish I could give grades based on the kind of students in my class, then you all would have A’s ! BUT I have to give letter grades based on the chemistry knowledge that you can show on exams, NOT the effort you put into studying or your character.
All grades will be final, so no need to ask. 1 point out of 1000 does make a difference. Do matter where the line is, someone will be 1 point from a grade cut off.
**I will hold all email asking about grades til I have them done, so I know what to tell you. You should have already reviewed your other grades, but let me know asap if you see an error in your final exam score, etc.

**IF YOU MADE A 'D' in chem 119, you really should consider retaking chem 119 or have a very good reason for this score if you decide to continue in chem 120. Ideally, you want to have all of the concepts from chem 119 firmly understood, so you can go on to chem 120. I will always remind you of the concepts we are building on, so you can review the material if you need to. Some students will be coming from 107 or from testing out of 119.

will anything be dropped. This is NOT midway of the 750 pts possible in
the lecture part of the course!!
For lab grades, I was given your lab percent- see the sheet that you can print for a full explanation. This lab percent was converted to 56 points, since it is 1/4 of the course. Your MIDTERM Lab percent and your points out of 54 WILL BE POSTED ON CANVAS. The total points were then 170 + 56 = 226.

*I don't really recommend any tutoring agency. I think you can pick it up yourself or with the free help available (the SI, the IA, the 215 HELD help desk, the tutor zones, my office hours, the sample exams, and reviews movies!). I think the problem with these tutoring agencies is that they teach: 1) methods other than what I do, so students get confused and remember about 1/2 of each so mess up the exams and 2) shortcuts that only work in certain circumstances, so students miss it when I give questions. Use the free tutoring if possible! See me during office hours for ideas.
You will have 7 sets of homework assignments, worth 10 pts each. Approximately 2 weeks of homework equals to one set.. When you miss a problem your online homework will show you how to work it or give you hints about how to work it. Then you will be given a similar, but different problem on your next attempt. You will have 10 attempts to get the problems correct.
**The due dates/times for your homework are in MindTap. In the syllabus, you see the dates that say "HWK Set #1 ENDS" This means that all of the homework from the beginning of the semester through that point will make up Homework set #1. If you get 95% of the points on this set, you will receive 10 course points. There will be 7 sets of homework.
Only the graded assignments MUST be done. The others are for your study (practice). You only need to do the required number of questions (e.g., 2 of 3). No extra credit for doing 3 of 3.
No difference in credit by attempts. You get the same credit if you complete the assignments on the first try or on the 8th try. No deductions for the number of tries it takes you to get to the required number of questions. Scroll to see all assignments in MindTap when in the weekly view
Using MindTap (some call it OWLbook or the Young,Vining book): Credit is given for the number of assignments (tutor questions and interactive questions) and mastery exercises that are mastered by the due date. You will be asked to do the Reviews as a chapter mini-exam. Things like the Challenge, and Study Guide are for your practice, along with another copy of the Review. I recommend these for study AFTER we have finished a chapter.
So if you master all that are assigned, you should receive full credit (10 homework points). The total possible is the addition of the numbers for all graded assignments. For each set, if you did all or at least 95% you will get 10 pts. If you get 90% of them, you will get 9 pts, 80% = 8pts, 70% = 7 pts, 60% = 6 pts, 50% = 5pt, 40% = 4 pts, below 40% = 0 pts.

**We don’t use the overall percentage in MindTap SO… the percent in the circle in MindTap doesn’t matter. I often only require a certain number of those possible, so everyone’s percent in the circle will go down. Do all unless it is clearly marked for you to do less than required by the system. For the homework assignments, we sum the points you earned and divide by the total possible, then multiply by 100 to get the percentage for that 2-week homework set. SO… the percent in the circle in MindTap doesn’t matter.
**HOMEWORK ISSUES:
**There are reported issues with MindTap and Chrome. If you have any difficulties with the homework, switch browsers to Firefox.
**For number 11 on the Chemdoodle Sketcher: First draw toluene, which is the alternating double bonds 6 sided structure with CH3 hooked to it. THEN click on the down arrow next to the circle with a plus in it. This will expand into a menu with the Rx tool. click on the Rx tool, then You want to hover over the C in the CH3 and an input box will come up. add a 1 in the box and click done. The CH3 should change to R1, then submit answer!
**On assignment 10.4 Mastery II, you need to draw 2 of a species if there is a coefficient of 2, like 2 CO; so you will need 2 boxes where you draw CO in each.
**on 19.4a, the tutored problem 19.4.1, I will not ask you to give the K for multiple equations. If you do the other parts correctly, you will get 1pt. 19.4a is worth 2 points, you can do the first question, so 1 out of 2 pts will be required for 19.4a
**19 Review On question #8, you will need to do calculations. Solve for x to compare molar solubilities for compounds with different stoichiometry, even though the problem says without calculations!
**On 21.1b, The instructions for part (a) say to not put in a coefficient of 1, to just leave it blank; while the instructions for part (b) say that you must put in coefficents of 1.
**On 21.3a, If the image does not appear, then change browsers (firefox perhaps). Chrome has some problems with this image.
** ON 21.1e for the cell notation: Make the single and double lines by using the key above the return key on the right side of the key board. The lowercase is \, while the uppercase is | Do two of the uppercase to get the double line.
**ON 21.1 M question #4 wants the 1/2 equations BEFORE you multiply to get the electrons the same number.
**Assignment 21.3 Mastery, for the 3rd group of questions: Only 1 question will be required NOT 2. For your exam 4, do the one that just says a 1M solution or just a solution- this will NOT require the Nernst Equation.**ON 21.2a for the second question (tutored problem 21.2.1) students are having questions about c and d. There is a long explanation under Frequently Asked Questions, then at the bottom of electrochemical section.

**Students cannot use calculators that are programmable or have alpha-numeric capabilities for the exams. This means no TI-eighty anything. You CAN NOT use a TI-83 since it has alphabetic memory. You need a TI 30 or 36 or its Casio equilivent. The calculator cannot have alphabetic memory. It should cost $9-15. Be sure to buy one with the keystrokes you like. For example: TI-83 require that you put in log then the number. If you want this same keystroke for your lower calculator, then at the store, hit the log button. If the calculator gives you an error, this calculator will require that you put in the number, then hit log. If the calculator says log and is ready for the number, this calculator has the same keystrokes as your TI-8X.
**If you missed an exam and need to sign up for the makeup exam, see or e-mail me. Makeups are granted for university reasons (or VERY good ones). Otherwise, the missed exam is the one you will replace with the final percentage.
** Remember that your final percentage can replace your lowest hourly exam, but you don't want two low exams ...so 1 bad exam is not a problem, but you must do well on the remaining
*Remember that your clicker, homework, Mini-Exams, and task pts should be at or near 100% on. IF you are doing these, you can make a little lower on exams than the letter grade you want in the course. For example if your exam average is around 68, then your points for clicker, homework, mini-exams, and tasks will bring up your course grade to a C (if you have all of these points).
**When it is available, download the grade calculator in the grades section below.
**Why is the exam average important???There is no extra credit. I don't curve, but will lower the points required for each grade at the end of the semester, based to a large part on the averages on the exams. Use the average to let you know both how you are doing compared to the class and how the class is doing. also remember that your exam grades can be a little lower than you want for the course, since your tasks (25 pts), clicker course points (30 pts), mini-exams (90), and homework (84 pts) are 250 points, so more than two test grades, for which you should get close to 100, in addition to the 1 exam grade that you can drop.
**Not happy with your Exam grade? Here are things that have helped students in the past:
**To
study for the exam:
1) do the two sample exams for each of the 4 old exams,
2) look over the study guides and practice on the MindTap reviews on the appropriate chapters,
3) go over your objective sheet,
4) practice any objectives that you are weak on by doing more problems on that
topic (using the reviews and study guides for each chapter)
5) Do a quick read
of the sections that are stated on your objective sheet for the objectives you are weak on.
6) Finally, go over
the sample exams again, this time read the question and say HOW to work the
problem, then uncover your answer and see if you know how to work the problem by
reading it.
7) Then get a good night's sleep!!

Exam II= 73.82 pts/100 pts for the total exam. Congrats to the 39 perfect scores and the 98 more will 90% or better on the full exam (On the total exam: 137A's + 95 B's + 103 C's + 73 D's!!). Expect 15 questions + the honor code (1 question counts as 2, another counts as 1.5, while the honor code is 0.5 for a total of 17 possible, but 15.5 were required for 100%.

You will need an iclicker app. For the iclicker app: If you do not already have an iclicker reef account, you can create one for free. **Chem 120 has two parts: 3/4 of the grade is from the lecture course, while 1/4 is from the lab course. The lab will be taught by a Teaching Assistant (a TA).
